Design is central to creating powerful retail experiences. Design is the vehicle to create and reinforce the consumer’s expectation for an experience that will be holistic among all the elements they interact with—from the merchandise to the environment. The design process also builds a platform for the discovery of new opportunities that go beyond solutions to immediate problems. Good design strikes a balance between the transient enthusiasms of trend and lasting quality.
In this step, alternative concepts are explored in visual sketch or mock-up form. In our experience, there is a high correlation between the quantity of ideas produced and the quality of the ideas. We expect to undertake a ranging exploration of ideas and conduct combinations of internal critiques and joint team work sessions. Cost and feasibility parameters are checked as this step concludes.

Creating a project vision through the selection of color, products, and materials is a balance of the practical and the aesthetic. Our Resource Design Studio is a vehicle for ongoing research into new products. It is also a vast library of samples and a broad-based resource data bank, a design and performance evaluation lab, a mock-up and model-building workroom, and a gallery of new and constantly changing materials and ideas critically important to the design process.

Stores are media that communicate messages about the store brand through their architecture, interior environment,
finishes, presentation, and services. Graphic communications offer additional ways to merge the temporal media of graphics, signage, and interactivity with the more permanent media of architecture and interiors to create comprehensive communications about the offer.
